My first foray into raw gold...

8 posts in this topic

I've bought enough slabbed gold now to feel somewhat comfortable buying raw.

This is for my Dansco type album, and I bought it from a dealer that's been a friend for over ten years. I measured and weighed it, and checked it against ANA grading standards. Although the scans suck, the coin has a nice slightly-coppery patina that shows no signs of being dipped or whizzed. There are also extremely few bag marks. It's somewhere in MS, although I'm not knowledgable enough to know the esact number.

At any rate, it's a nice type coin and will look great in my gold page.

Looks like a nice half-eagle from the scan. I can't see it well enough to guess at grade though. Not too many nice half eagles found raw anymore. The 1900-P is common date through MS64.

There's a guy in my coin club ("JayWalker" across the street) who collects these raw as well. He's also pretty wise in that he only buys lustrous coins that are priced close to bullion. That way, even if he gets stuck with a fake, he's not out much. He was collecting raw, but recently, just to check his grading, he sent ten into PCGS. Much to his surprise (and delight), he did get back three BU coins, including an MS-62! All the rest graded AU-58. I believe his current goal is to put together a nice date set.

Great job, and a great series of gold to pick up on, one that is actually relatively safe, so long as you're in the bullion price range.

At our local coin club. I'm not kidding! There are several old-time collectors and dealers who set up there, and JayWalker has become something of a specialist cherry-picking these guys.

If you're seriously interested, you might PM him on that "other" board. He hasn't registered here (yet).
