James - Try a vise - it splits the seam and then you just separate the two halve with NO chance of damage to the coin. OTOH, smashing them with a hammer may be cathartic - especially if you don't like plastic

Do you place the slab across the vise in a horizontal attitude, or do you just grab one edge in the vise?

Horizontal with the coin "looking at you" - I put the long edge (length) against the vise sides and slowly exert pressure until it "Pops" (Splits along the seam) - occasionally you have to give it a small but sharp push on the vise handle - the vise needs to have sides that are not perfectly smooth (like some woodworking vises have) because if they are smooth and the edge is a least bit angled the slab can flip out of the vise.

 

Practice on "cheap" modern slaps that you can pick up in dealers "bargain bins"
