Question 'bout DDO

3 posts in this topic

Some DDO's (doubled die obverse), like the famous 1955 lincoln cent, are immediately obvious from the other side of the room, and visible with the naked eye. Another good example is the 1961 proof Franklin DDR (doubled die reverse). Most, as in the vast majority, require at least a decent amount of magnification. I use a 10x loupe, just because I am a college student and couldn't afford anything better. A 16x loupe is usually recommended (others more qualified can tell you what kind and where to get them). I don't know what you're favorite series is, but there are books for just about anything you want. These will help you identify doubled dies, and cherrypick interesting things. As for value, that really depends on several factors. First, how rare is it? Some double dies have only a few known examples. Others have tens of thousands. Second, how interested are people in it, and how famous is it. Things like the 1955 Lincoln and 1961 Franklin often sell for hunndreds or thousands, whereas their normal counterparts are worth fractions thereof. However, something not many people are interested in could be worth only 50 cents more than its counterpart, or no premium at all.

the problem with me is that i don't know what series or group of coins to collect... first, i buy my coins from one dealer only here in the Philippines... the old lady is not really a dealer but a vendor who buy and sells coins and bills.... i simply "cherrypick" coins that i fancy...recently, i fancy copper coins... i simply dig on her "pile of coins" hoping to find rare stuffs.. i do sometimes able to chance upon 1955D, 1957D and 1959D lincoln cents and one 1920 and a whole lot in between upto 1977D...i also got this 1 dollar -Yuan Shi kai flying dragon silver however, the obverse is pretty much "beaten" which made the old guy looked like a clown instead of a general but the reverse is pretty much fine....a couple of 2-shillings and australian pennies (1939-etc)...and a 1907s 0ne peso US-Philippine coin at AU condition....all in all, i bought my collection for less than $20...right now, i'm saving some money to buy that 1900 morgan silver the old lady is selling at about $18 in XF condition...do you think this is a nice coin? and i was hoping to get hold of a 1943 lincoln cent that's why i keep on digging on that pile of coins (lol!)
