Patriot Act provision takes effect today which affect ebayers and collectors.

Many ebayers and collectors take cash to the local bank and get money orders to buy coins and ebay items. This is no longer the case.

I spoke to a bank representative today. Banks can no longer sell money orders, only bankchecks, official checks and cashiers checks where the name of the payee and payor are written on the financial instrument at time of purchase. In addition, to purchase a cashier's check, you must withdrawn funds from your checking account. If you do not have an account, the bank will not issue you a cashier's check. Postal money orders and independent money order companies are currently not affected. Postal money order limit is $700.

I don't see what is wrong with these new rules. If you don't want names printed on the checks, you very well might be doing something that you shouldn't be doing.

Postal money orders go up to $1000.

There's nothing wrong, just new provisions that take affect. You are correct for domestic money order maximums at $1000. The international money order max. is $700. As for names, you haven't heard the stories I have about transactions in the 1960's and 1970's. wink.gif

The Patriot Act will undoubtedly snare bunches of Al Q'aida bad guys.

"Al Q'aida" is 21st centuryspeak for "boogeyman."

You may easily subsitute any term you wish in order to make The PATRIOT Act serve your purpose. Gun nut, cash buyer, privacy nut, citizen, demonstrator, opinionated person.....all fair game for our new PARADIGM.

God save us all from the fascists running the show now.

My main concern is many coin dealers and collectors are not taking the Patriot Act provisions seriously. Most of the top level coin dealers with big clientel will enforce the letter of the new laws. However, the smaller to midlevel dealers seem to be oblivious to the actual requirements. ICTA gives out solid information as to implementation, but it costs a bit of money to join. Soon, many of the coin shows with tons of cash floating about will undoubtedly be monitored by the Feds.
