How to Distinguish Silver Proof from Clad Proof

How do you distinguish the silver proof quarters from the 1999-2005 proofs from the clad proof quarters? Other than the fact that they come in different color boxes, I can't find a way to see a difference.

Thanks

You should be able to look at the edge: clad proof quarters will show the bright copper cladding, and silver proof quarters will be all one color. Also, I don't know if your quarters have toning or not, but untoned silver and copper nickel will be different colors: the silver will have a whiter appearance.

I assume that you are referring to raw coins, not encapsulated ones. If the edge of the coin shows evidence of a copper core, then it is clad. Whatever you do, DON'T (!) drop it on a hard floor to hear if it makes a "ringing" or "thudding" sound.

Welcome to the neighborhood! You'll find that not very many of the members are around on the weekends. Most of them are around during the week to relieve the stress after work........sort of like rehab. 27_laughing.gif27_laughing.gif

If you compare the two types side to side, the silver coins are way whiter. The edge would be the easiest way to tell, though.
