Care to grade this Peace Dollar?

15 posts in this topic

I rarely buy raw coins anymore, especially on ebay, but I recently picked up a raw Peace Dollar. I have bought from the seller before and was pleased with the coin so I thought it was a safe bet (with a good return policy).

I don't have a lot of experience grading these so I thought I'd ask for opinions. The obverse if very clean with only a few light scattered marks. The reverse has a bit more chatter, but still not too bad. The luster is a bit dulled from the thick crusty tone.

Let me know what you think.

To me, this is a true slider BU - the exact kind of coin that gets into MS-62 holders these days. They used to call this a "commercial unc". I would grade it AU-58.

It's an underrated date, and not easy to find nice.

What it has going for it:

A great strike....the hair definition and eagle's feathers are very well defined.

No large distracting marks on Liberty's face.

Against it:

Rim dings, especially on the reverse.

The scrape along the base of Liberty's neck; that will likely be looked at as wear.

The toning probably hides much of the luster...hard to tell from the photo.

I would guess it would end up in an AU58 holder....

So it grades somewhere between AU58 and MS63. That's just what I thought. laugh.gif

I can't see anything I would call rub or wear on the coin, though the tone could be hiding it. The tone does hide the luster. Anyone think I should dip it to get a higher grade? 893whatthe.gif

I'm not sure if I will get it graded. A few years ago I got my wife interested enough to let me help her put together a nice AU set of Peace Dollars. Well, the 34-S is NGC EF-45 and the only one slabbed. I have since picked up a few upgrades. I need to see if she likes this one better than her other one (if I decide to let her have it). wink.gif

I guess I paid around an MS61 price on this one so I think I did ok, even if it would end up graded AU58.

I repeat ... do NOT dip that coin!!!

Please don't dip that coin.

DON"T DIP THE COIN

Tauchen Sie nicht die Münze ein!

Non tuffi la moneta!

Ne plongez pas la pièce de monnaie !

The plastic grade on a coin may have some importance

but it's not the be all and the end all of a coin.

It's just so damn hard to find original unmolested coins that look great.

That's the bottom line in my opinion. 893crossfingers-thumb.gif

So, was that one vote for not dipping? Come on, don't beat around the bush.

Dip it,it doesn't have any real color on it...

This is what a real toned Peace dollar looks like:

Hasn't anyone taught you to be careful around raw coins? Now you've gone and sneezed on that poor thing. You really shouldn't be handling your coins at all when you have a cold. I see NGC managed to seal most of the toxic waste in. I guess it turned in the holder? What a shame.
