ANACS Crossover & Rarity Surprise

8 posts in this topic

Crossed my first ANACS coin to NGC last week and received it today. Thought you might find the results interesting:

I felt the coin was PQ for the grade, and the color is much nicer in hand than my photography indicates. Imagine my surprise, however, to find I'd discovered one of the leading rarities of the 20th century - the finest known 1938-D 35c piece. hail.gif

Here are some closer pics. I'm not a Buffalo expert, but this example seems weak in the strike department. I bought it for the color, which is quite pleasing when not photographed by me... 27_laughing.gif

It was interesting to receive the entire ANACS surround - I didn't expect this because I didn't realize that the ANACS label was adhered to it. With PCGS and ICG you get just the label.

I can't complain. A point bump and some nice error plastic for my Collectors Society coupon!

A 35C piece is indeed rare. Maybe it will sell for Zillion$ on ebay. I can picture the title," MS66 35C piece". You might even get on the Tonight Show. thumbsup2.gif

Hoot, thanks for weighing in on the strike - I was hoping you might. flowerred.gif

I was looking mainly at the central area in the hair and on the reverse at the end of the tail. Are these typically lacking definition on '38-Ds?

Beijim,

Nice coin. thumbsup2.gif

The buffalo’s tail looks like it may be a little weak from your photo, but the central hair area always looks like that. Overall, your coin’s strike looks fine for the date and grade to me.

Usually, the difference between a grade of MS-66 and MS-67 for a 1938-D is the luster. The luster has to be booming to get a grade of MS-67 for this date.

I also consider the tip of the long feather of the Indian, as well as the points mentioned. The tip of the feather can blend, especially on the left, as the die was used and polished. Yours looks pretty complete and the overall depth of the devices looks nice. There's some die erosion that shows on the back of the Indian's neck and the bison's hind leg, but it's not distracting.

Again, sweet coin. cloud9.gif
