Quite a few robberies at the FUN show.

19 posts in this topic

Anywhere from 4-7 major hits. Some of the PCGS posts are in details as to what was stolen. One hit was for $200K. I urge those going to Long Beach to hitch a ride from a friend and/or bring a buddy to your car when walking back to the parking lot. I remember back in the early 1990's, there was a Columbian gang who made some major hits at the Long Beach show. Most times, the security( LB offduty cops) would walk you to your car. Nowadays, this isn't the case. I've seen many dealers walk or trudge their large coin cases to the offsite parking lot. I really would no longer recommend this. I believe this is the beginning of a new era in robberies. At a recent LB show, I was taking a couple of dealers back to LAX from the show. We were followed for about 3-4 blocks going down various different streets, but I managed to make a couple of maneuvers and lost them.

I read a year or two ago that a dealer was literally followed for hundreds of miles after a show while the thieves waited for the right opportunity. With his goodies locked in the trunk, he stopped at a restraunt. Afterwards, he discovered that his trunk was popped and his whole inventoy stolen.

Be aware of your surroundings at all times and carry a big stick.

I don't believe guns will be the answer. By the time a collector or dealer realizes he is being robbed, the gun becomes useless. In addition, the robber is more inclined to shoot first if he/she knows there is going to be a gunfight. The best prevention is being smart and figuring out your in and out plans from a show. I always offer people rides to the airport and/or ask them if they wish to be escorted to their car. The buddy/buddy system really works. At Long Beach, there is a ramp in the rear where you may drive up, retrieve your coins from your table and drive away. The lot has security. However, the surrounding neighborhood is not so good, and there lies the problem. Many dealers who are staying in the cheaper hotels will walk back and forth to their hotels in so-so areas. That's asking for trouble. For some reason, I have a feeling these latest robberies had inside information as to dealer habits. Just a hunch, but confused-smiley-013.gif.

There's only one word you need for real security. Blackwater.

confused.gifI did not see where the security was lacking at the FUN show . There were several of the hired security people on and around the bourse floor. I also noted a few security people out front and along the side exit to the paid parking lot . I left Saturday afternoon well after 7pm ( spent a lot of time chatting at the J H Cline booth where he signed his Third edition SLQ book I had got from him) thumbsup2.gif. When we walked out to the car it was already dark outside , but the mood amongst everyone walking out in small groups to our cars was a happy one , not one filled with fear of getting robbed or mugged . We did not see anyone that looked like they were stalking or staking out their next victims.

I look for odd people and 'wrong' scenes anytime I attend an event like this , and follow the same rules I learned from my years in the military . Carelessness breeds opportunities for the vultures to feed on those who choose not to exercise prudence and common sense about themselves and their property 893naughty-thumb.gif.

Let's say that again:

When I first saw this thread title I wasn't sure if TT was referring to the recent hold-up robberies or the general business on the bourse floor. 27_laughing.gif
