NGC Class Act & ANACS Coup

8 posts in this topic

This is the second installment of my FUN report. I very much enjoyed the brunch hosted by NGC, and Chris summarized the event very well (except, of course, he didn't give Hayden enough grief for being late). The NGC team approach and commitment to service was on display at the brunch as well as at its table on the bourse floor. Dena & Scott had everything well organized, David Lange humored us autograph hounds, and Mark Salzberg graciously answered questions.

I didn't ask any questions of Mr. Salzberg. If I had the chutzpah, I would have asked him about the ANACS display at the show. Here is a picture of the new ANACS slab (I had to take the picture at an angle so the slab wouldn't reflect the flash back at the camera):

My question, though, has more to do with the picture of this slab:

Make sure that you read the pedigree on the label. I've known for quite some time that the owner of the Sunnywood Shield Nickel Variety Collection had sold the collection mostly intact to Dave Bowers. I also know that the coins were previously in NGC slabs (in fact, Sunnywood worked hard to get the coins attributed and holdered by NGC). It blew my socks off that Dave Bowers gave ANACS the opportunity to holder this important collection.

I could not bring myself to ask Mr. Salzberg about this coup by ANACS while enjoying his hospitality at the brunch. In any event, the question is probably better put to those who use NGC instead of to NGC itself. Will the fact that Dave Bowers places his own coins with ANACS have any effect on whether or not you'll also submit to ANACS? After all, if ANACS is good enough for QDB . . . .

Paid endorsement?

Am I the only one who just hates the insert? It looks low class. I'd expect this insert from PCI, not ANACS.

Are those ANACS slabs actually curved like they look in the photo, or will they lay flat?

The Sunnywood/Bowers shield nickel also improved a grade. It was in an NGC65 holder. Note also the ANACS slab uses the brand new Cherrypickers' Guide numbering (this was FS-003.2).

I was under the impression that the ANACS slab rollout had been delayed some (as announced by James Taylor) while they got the final bugs out. I have a few coins into ANACS right now - based on these photos, I might be happier getting them back in the older holders.

ANACS should hire a graphics artist to do a makeover on that insert, IMO.

I am usally not one to jump on a company for the inserts... but I will agree those look horrid.. the slabs will lay flat but how will you get them in a slab box? I think this slab change is going to have a negative effect on business for them... to be honest it looks like one of the many alphabet soup slabs and those look cheesy. I like the old small slabs... net grade or no net grade...

No you’re not. In fact I hate the whole holder, not just the insert.

John

IMO everything about the holder stinks.
