What a blowhard! I used to remember him shooting his mouth off about some such [embarrassing lack of self control] he had for sale at Long Beach shows. He had some nice coins however but the prices were...shall we say....Anaconda-like. 893whatthe.gif

That's not true. Anaconda actually seems to sell some of his coins at those prices.

Looks like JP is now selling "Certified Vintage Photographs"....and they're graded by CGC. foreheadslap.gifvomit.gif

He once sent me $4500 for a comic he bought from me on EBAY. I totally forgot to get it out as I was selling tons of similar HighGrade books in the late 90's. 5 months later he writes me and was like ...'hey, you never sent this book I won",...I apologized when I realized he was right. I asked via e-mail where I should send the book,..as I had lost records associated with where to send it. He never wrote me back....easiest $4500 I ever made. I swear,..I dont know how the guy made his fortune,..ZERO BIZ SENSE,...musta really stepped in it to begin with. My only explanation.

I'm not certain which part isn't true. He did have some nice coins. He owned a 94-S dime at one time and had some really nice gold as I recall. His prices were outrageous however....similar to Anaconda. Whether JP actually sold anything I really don't know and frankly I'm surprised Anaconda sells anything as it is.

Why are you bragging about this. You owe the guy $4500 refund, or send him the comic. Do a google search and you will find his address. foreheadslap.gif

Jay Parrino blazed the trail for super rarities. He was buying them at the right time [early 1990's] and setting price records. He made plenty of money - heck, he made $500k off me alone! But I think things turned for him after he was nabbed making the deal for the 1933. Health issues probably made it even more desirable to cut way back in coins.

Someone told me his line of credit was severely curtailed back in the late 1990's and there were some "fire sales" along the way.

All I know is that when he was doing coins, you could visit his web site and they never seems to change. It was like that dealer at Long Beach and your Swiss coin, you could go visit it any time you wanted because you knew it was always going to be there.

As for Anaconda, if you are interested in a coin, call him up and discuss the price. wink.gif

Sorry I cant bad mouth Brandon and Anaconda as they treated me well - Went down 1000 bux on a coin I need to complete a set I was working on. Coin price was dramatically reduced from retail and then talked another grand -It was a NGC coin so I was happy there Coin was better than pictured. What more can you ask for , Quick Reliable service Quality Coins and willing to negotiate.

Yes, there were ... if by 'firesale' you mean sales at realistic prices. At the 2001 Midwinter ANA he sold off a whole bunch of cool stuff: the Eliasberg 1913 Liberty nickel, the MS66 1876-CC 20 center, the MS69BN 1793 wreath cent, the gem 1927-D $20 and a gem 1795 eagle. I would imagine that on most coins he made a profit [about $300k on the 1913], but each realized much much less than his listed prices.

the MS69BN 1793 wreath cent, the gem 1927-D $20

I don't remember the specifics, but I seem to recall that the Wreath cent brought a small fraction of his listed price. It's been a long time so I'm not saying tha as fact.

Did the 27-D Saint sell? I thought he consigned 2 of them to an auction and they failed to meet his reserve. I might be thinking of someone else..

No, the 27-D was the one coin that didn't sell. And you are correct that the wreath cent went for a small fraction of his $1M list price. I remember telling Laura to bid and her hesitating just an instant too long ... at $165k or so.

That gem 1795 eagle was a great coin!

TDN is correct as usual. Jay Parrino had the "pick of the litter" of Ted Naftzger's Early Date Large Cents after Naftzger sold them to Eric Streiner. This was around 1992. Parrino showed up at the 1993 EAC Convention with around 200 absolutely mind boggling early date Large Cents with equally mind boggling prices! He wanted something like 2 million for the Specimen 67BN Chain Cent and 1.5 million for the Atwater Specimen 68 Red Wreath cent. And remember, this was in the early 90s, when the coin market was in the crapper. He had those coins in inventory for many years before they sold( at much lower prices, I suspect ). I never had any luck buying from him. I was especially hot to buy the 65RB 1794 S-32 Large Cent, ex. Naftzger, but every time I walked over to discuss a purchase, the price got higher! Jay is a magnificent "bull thrower", to use a kinder, gentler term. Every time I talked to him about a certain coin, the story would change. I finally did get the S-32, but I needed to have Tony Terranova buy it from him along with a few other things( for Tony ) to make the price somewhere within the realm of reason.

I agree, however I find it rather strange that he would drop his coin and comic business that he put so much effort and hype into for some cruddy old pictures? 893scratchchin-thumb.gif

As to Anaconda, they do have outrageous prices but I love their NR auctions. cloud9.gif

I mostly just look at Anaconda listings but I did manage to pick up one coin from him a couple of years ago. I think it must have been a consignment coin since it is not his usual fare. It was an ANACS MS65 Elgin commemorative half with a light even golden tone. It's a strong 65 in any body's holder and I got it for a bargain price in the ANACS slab. grin.gif
