If it's raw...I don't think many folks are going to jump in at that price level for fear of it being AT. I'd like to see that one in hand as I am not completely convinced it wont holder.........but knowing how much it would bring if it were it does beg the question.....why sell it raw???

That's some excellent between the lines reading. hail.gif

Is adding more color to a so-so NT coin a common or easy thing to do?

It's easier to do that on a white coin or so I've been told.

I don't believe it would certify at a respected TPG and I don't believe it is entirely NT. There are certain characteristics visible in the poor images that make me think AT and there is no reason to offer this coin raw at $400 when it would fetch better and easier money in a holder. The seller obviously knows something of the market in order to offer it at such a high price, and any seller who knows that would also know enough to slab the coin. Lastly, we all know darn well that you are Blowing Smoke to even suggest that such a questionable investment would not bother you at all if proven to be a POS.

In general, a dipped out white silver coin is a poor candidate for AT. The reacting silver surface is just too random for a uniform color distribution. Most AT'ers will start out with a coin with slight patina. However, the true expert AT'ers will take a silver coin, dip it, and remove all surface contaminants before they apply a thin film. The gas, substance or chemical is applied to the thin film, forming a nice uniform surface in which to "paint" their masterpiece.

During the slump, semiconductor wafer-processing equipment could have a second life. Tungsten, silane, TEOS, all sorts of pretty gases. I'll bring it up at the next Q meeting...

In general, there are several gases that turn silver, bronze and nickel pretty colors. That part is the easiest to accertain. The second stage is the balance of gas with humidiity and temperature, which also includes the conditions of elevation and atmospheric conditions. The most difficult part of the process is the application and desired look of the final result. Ideally, an AT'er will want the process to be predictable, but, unfortunately, the surface irregularities of different coin types do not allow this. Sometimes the most beautiful toning results are accidents.

I don't understand how there could be any debate about this coin. The listing asserts not only that the toning is "[g]uaranteed natural" but that the coin "will grade at any service." End of discussion.

Remember, "[n]ice stuff isn't cheap!" I expect one of you to disconnect your brain and "tep up to the plate." C'mon, take one for the team.

Of course, in order to return the coin it can't have been removed from its sealed holder, which makes it hard to submit to a grading service - not to mention you get a full 3 days to return it which is more than enough time to get it certified by any grading service. wink.gif

Guaranteed natural and will grade at any service! Bright, vivid hues of red, magenta, pumpkin, green and lavender. 3-day, NO-QUESTIONS-ASKED, return privilege. Provided, coin hasn't been removed from sealed holder and is in same pristine condition as shipped.

Is there some sort of double-secret club where members know not only how coins are AT'd but who practices the chemistry? I've read a lot of vague references on the boards that leave me wondering. I tried my special decoder ring . . . 1035010-diversions_funcode.jpg . . . but it just doesn't work.

Possibly.

How does one gain admission to the club? Hypothetically speaking of coarse. 893scratchchin-thumb.gif
