NGC Develops New Holder to Enable Viewing of a Coin's Edge

Do you think this improvement will also enable easier photography of coins in these specialty NGC holders? I know from experince that NGC slabbed coins are some of the toughest to get a nice picture of.

Will we be able to reholder our current coins to this new holder?

Very cool idea by they way, especially for someone like me who primarily collects coins with lettered edges!

That's really neat. Does NGC have any future plans to make this feature available in the NGC Multi-Coin Holder? Also is there a possibility in the future this will become a requestable feature for all coins not just those "with special or unusual edge attributes"?

Also Hayden you said ANACS has done this before. When did they do this before?

Yes but the way you phrased it it sounded like ANACS has done this before their new holder insane.gif

Also maybe i'm just cynical but I find it odd after 19 years this is the first time a major grading service has offered a holder with a viewable edge. Plus what's even more funny is both are bringing them out at around the same time 893scratchchin-thumb.gif

Maybe NGC is worried that ANACS will replace them now that Taylor is in command tongue.gif

There was a wannabe service,DCGS or something like that, where the coin was actually stuck out from the slab and you could see the entire rim all the way around...

There are many ways you could spin the topic. The first time to my knowledge a new ANACS holder was talked about was on August first link i'm not sure when the first verified info came in about being able to see the edge with ANACS. To my memory that would be a few days ago but it could be earlier. I'm just wondering when NGC decided to look into this. It just seem like a coincedence with timing really. But it's always good to question why things are the way they are.

This of course takes some of the wind out of ANACS sails since they won't be the only one where you can see the edge. Of course they are offering it for all coins. Hopefully NGC will do the same in the near future.

Also another thought I just had is are error coins eligible for this holder? Such as coins struck on the wrong planchets...

Also Hayden to my knowledge the PCGS multi-holder is only availible to bulk submitters. Hope this helps.

Yes it does,I was wondering why PCGS didn't advertise them and why they are not often available for sale:

I think that PCGS desicion of only letting bulk submitters slab coins in the multi-holder isn't going to be that successfull in the long run.NGC's personalization program where the every submitter can do the multi-holder,and even make up their own sets has been very profitable to them...

He couldn't help a new company, ICG, remain as a solid competitor to NGC/PCGS, so I have even less faith that he will be able to change the perception of ANACS to make them on the same level as NGC/PCGS. It's hard enough to create a market impression when your company is new, much less change long entrenched opinions. ANACS may be able to gain standing (and I'm sure James Taylor will be able to achieve this). However, I don't think that ANACS will be able to move to a top tier company. Too many entrenched opinions about ANACS and too many of their coins already on the market.

Also, in the past NGC used to cut the inner core to reveal the edge for some coins. I only saw this a couple of times and it was on RARE coins where the edge mattered.

The option is nice, but I don't currently have any coins in my collection for which it will be necessary or available. I would be much more pleased if NGC made the translucent rings used in multi-coin holders available for single-coin holders.

Hey Scott is it possible this new insert will be availible for NCS soon?

Posted

Great idea. Hopefully it will be available before I get some of my coins reslabbed.

As Greg has already mentioned, I have seen NGC holdered IHCs that have the inner core cut away to expose a reeded edge! That is mighty rare indeed. This would be a nice option to have on lettered edge coinage and also on 1836 RE halves.

Hey...I'm confused. I thought PCGS were the leaders in coin grading and customer service! yeahok.gif

I just don't understand why NGC won't offer a clear core? How many times do people have to request this? I know a lot of people that won't submit to NGC just because their slab looks like a plastic bar of soap.

For those of us that collect older coins, Indians and Saints (with edge features), this new holder will be a great addition that is available to collectors who need it these coin issues.

This is a tremendous improvement in encapsulating coins with distinctive edges. It's availability my help uncover previously unknown varieties of Saint-Gaudens eagles and double eagles, particularly among the high relief variety. Owners of early US coins, IR 1921 Morgans and some modern commemoratives will also appreciate this.

I like it...but not having it available for all coins is a real bummer frown.gif

As Hayden pointed out....I have quite a few IHC's that are swallowed up by the current inserts so there is no way to properly image the coin foreheadslap.gif
