Coin Books for Kids

Hi All --

My 8 year old daughter (soon to turn 9) has picked up some of her dad's interest in collecting. grin.gif She enjoys the Lincolns, but has developed a genuine interest in WLH (Bob's turn to grin.gif), showing much more sophistication than her old man. We've picked up a couple of the common dates at each of the last couple of local shows.

She's a smart girl; but, of course, the standard numismatic literature is a bit much for her. Can anyone recommend some good books for kids on coin collecting? I need some help playing Santa.

Thanks.

Yes, Yes, Yes----Child has potential----Certainly every bit as smart as her dad!! When I was 9, I had a Red Book. It went wild after that. Now I have bookcases full of everything. At least my son will be able to read a lot. Must be something about girls on this forum. Tom B ---CT collector and now IGWT. Like me, you guys are very fortunate to have at least one. My Karen Marie [20 in January] has claimed the 89CC Morgan. Child does have expensive tastes. My son, Dave, wants the CC twenty and the 21S Walker----he ain't nobody's dummy either. Watch out guys. If you educate them, they will pick your teeth clean. Bob [supertooth]

Yes Mark----I knew one of you fellas would pick up on that. When you live and breathe something for soooo many years, it is hard to totally put it aside. Just like with the Walkers. I started two sets when I was a kid. Never could find a nice Vf 'early' Walker then. But now I am spending my retirement days doing what I could not afford to do when I was a young kid. Maybe we can get IGWT's daughter to convert him over to another aspect of the hobby? Bob [supertooth]

besides he wouldn't be able to handle you "rugged smell" AKA unshowered coin collector poke2.gif

As far as a book how good of a reader is she? If she's good at reading and comprehension some of your more basic coin books would work. I'll go make a list of them flowerred.gif

Hayden----Got an extra room or two-----I suppose you would want the 46--0 Seated Dollar? Or the 37D three-legged Buff? Or maybe the 09S---vdb? In all seriousness, be patient----Rome wasn't built in a day. Take those 20 buck coins----buy well----and in ten years you will have some coins to be proud of. We all had to start slowly. Get all the education that your brain can hold----coin education too----libraries are still free I think. One day you could be the QDBowers of the Numismatic world. Just the other day I emailed my daughter at college. Told her a one liner. I said to do what the Army says, "Be all that you can be". I told her that my goals in life were now to see her reach her goals. She is a smart child and I always encourage her. You too can be all that you want to be. So can IGWT's daughter. We just need to keep you guys focused on the goals that you want for yourselves. Take one step at a time----work hard---stay motivated----in no time the years will roll on by and your collection will be a bread winner. So will your job if you never give up your dreams. Ok a couple of good videos would be Ship of Gold, Money History in Your Hands and Modern Marvels: The US Mint Money Machine

As far as books the red book is a good start. you probably have a used one around there anyway since it's more about the different coins, dates, mintages, etc.

Any of the Coin Clinic books by Alan Herbert those are fun. He also has a new book Coin Collecting 101 that sound like it has promise.

100 Greatest US Coins also sounds promising. This is supposed to have tons of pictures.

The following books are in the Money market catalog under the young collector category.

The Story of Money, Money Money Money: The meaning of the Art and Symbols on United Sates Paper Currency, Money by Eyewitness books(recomended by Hoot earlier), the Buffalo Nickel, Coin Collecting for Kids.

You might also want to see what coin books your local library has and see if any of those might be good.

Hope this helps flowerred.gif
