Quick Questions On decision to Grade

17 posts in this topic

As I continue to go through all these coins I have found - How do you decide which ones to get graded or even furhur to keep or get rid of. I put a few pictures up of a few decent Morgan Head Liberty Dollars I picked and liked out from my stack. I still need to go through tons of coins (Buffalo Nickels, Dimes, Quarters, Pennies) but since I'm new to this I wanted to see if anyone has a few tips - pointers - to help me along in the right direction.

Also need to figure out how to put these pictures up without the attachment like everyone else does

Here's what I'd to do get started. Take them all to a dealer, and ask for an offer, but mention that you don't mind if he wants to exclude some coins for an offer. After he separates out the ones he deems worthy of purchase, thank him kindly for his help, gather the coins back up, and say that you'll need to go home and think about it.

The coins he made an offer on are the first ones to even consider grading. Image them and post them here on the boards, and some of the good folks on the forum will provide you excellent advice on which are worth submitting.

This coin would not be worth grading. It is a circulated Morgan... depending on the mintmark which is located on the other side of the coin under the eagle if it has one... Which would either be an "O" or "S".... that will help determine its value... 1886 S is a better date...

This is an excellent post for us "newer" collectors. I have been collecting my whole life, but only recently began sending coins in for grade. 3 out of 10 times I get rejected straight up (no grade due to cleaning or other), 1 ot of 3 times I am dissappointed with the grade (AU v. MS60 or 63 v. 65, etc.). HOWEVER, 1 out of 10 times I get a huge surprise and get a 66 or 67 on an ebay coin I paid 20 or 30 bucks for. I collect mostly Morgan Dollars and Nickels, so this usually is enough for me to keep "trying". It is so difficult to verify cleaning or dipping when buying online, but this chat board has been very helpful!!!

I never thought about posting a pic on here to see what the thoughts are so I will try a few. Some I have sent in and some I am think about...I will let you know the grades in the next post:

The easiest thing to do is post the image as an attachment then edit your post using the attachment link ... use the image buttom to make it work...

As for the 1891 .... MS 63 at best and maybe Body Bagged.... Not graded due the scratch... Not Worth submitting.. unless you need it for a registry set

Send the 1886 in if you plan on selling it or need it for a registry set.... Otherwise keep it raw if you want it for an album I don't see any lamination.. I see a spot on the coin... Still MS 63 ++ in my opinion... James has a wonderful collection of these and he can better grade these better than I can....nice coin... here is a link to James' coins... Nice Liberty Nickel Set

Sorry about the small pic on the 1878CC...how do you do it w/o the attachment?? This one actually did come back MS62PL... GOOD CALL...I actually called it 64DMPL...again, a dissapointment.

Without seeing the backside or a larger image of the front hard to say why it came back the way it did... but I am sure there is a reason....

The 1886 has the look of being whizzed to me. Can't be certain from the pic, but it has the glow of a whizzed nickel. Otherwise, a very rare and nice coin.

If your purpose is to sell, I would send in the 1886 and the CC both. Both look like nice coins, and will sell better certified. Congratulations on having such a nice pair of coins!
