1899-O dime

6 posts in this topic

Here is a dime I've had for about 9 years, but just photographed it. My digital camera is not the best but is good enough for now. I had not looked at the dime in years and had forgotten how nice the colors were.

I'll have to go and take a picture of the reverse. The obverse had the best toning. The reverse only has a bit of toning.

When I bought it in 1997, it seemed like a good deal. Then in 2000, I wished I had spent the money on tech stocks. Now I'm much happier I spent the money on the coin.

Thanks for the comments on my old dime. My camera batteries died so I had to wait a bit before I could take pictures of the reverse. The reverse is rather plain when compaired to the obverse.

I'm not sure why one side toned so much nicer than the other. I would have expected the reverse to have darker toning if it were kept in a cardboard/paper album. It is an AU50 coin. I guess it could have been placed in a paper roll after some circulation and the obverse was against the paper end. This would cause the obverse to tone while keeping the reverse much lighter.
