Is this a die crack??

11 posts in this topic

I'm no expert, by any means, but I've only really looked for (and noticed) die cracks on 19th century coins.

I've never had one pointed out to me on a Buffalo nickel, Mercury Dime, Walking Liberty Half or anything more modern.

It is kinda straight for a die crack.

At any rate, it is some kind of damage imparted to the die.

Might be a stray piece of metal caught between the die and struck.

First I've ever seen for this date.

Everybody usually looks for the Double Ear on 84 Phillys.

The best I can do right now is the attachment.. I don't have the coin yet. The seller says its a die crack but I know how that goes... No big loss if not only paid little over a dollar.

When you get the coin.............if the mark appears to be raised above the surface it may be the result of a die gouge. As everyone said, it seems to be too straight to be a die crack...................if the mark appears to be recessed below the surface, it may be a strike-through error as mentioned.

I wonder if Billy Crawford is around and if he has seen this one before?

Difficult to be sure from the photos, but it does not look like a die crack to me. Most likely post-strike damage - somebody scratched the coin. Some possibility it's a strike-through.

Well.. I got the coin today and my final verdict is that it is indeed a die crack. It actually starts at the hairline and goes through his ear (looks pierced). I would post better pics but the previous one came out better than mine...
