Is this a 1916 proof lincoln cent?

This is a pic of a 1916 MPL. Notice the wide, flat rims and the near perfect strike. Every detail in Lincoln's beard is visible. Also look at the textured fields. I think this coin was one of the first struck as I have never seen a MPL with more texture. As the coins were struck the dies would wear and many MPLs have more of a satin appearance.

That's a great coin chinook.

What a strike.

If I'm thinking right the mint reworked the die for the 1916 matte proof. Maybe it's just me but I don't see a lot of 16s. When I do the detail is great but the color is usually ugly. Chinook, your coin has it all. Beautiful.

Thanks Larry.

Your right the mint did rework the dies. Thats why so may business strikes look so good. I think this date confuses many people.

I still havent mastered the pics on this coin. It is really a yellow coin with green imbedded very deeply. I love it for how textured the fields look. Gives it a very bold look.

It's a proof alright.

It has those broad, flat, wire rims that give it away.

In 1916 the whole obverse for Lincolns was re-worked. It was the last time anything was done with the master hub until it was scrapped after the 1968 coins were made.

Proof__Coins20, neither the strike nor the rims are indicative of a Proof. If you keep asking enough people on enough forums, someone will probably tell you that the coin you posted is a Proof. It is not, however.

Mark, that is a beautiful response. I had been sitting here with my father-in-law when I opened this thread and I told him that there were about six threads started in regard to this coin, between the PCGS and NGC boards, and that I only responded to the original thread at PCGS to mention that this was not a proof. Then, we read your post and I couldn't help but laugh! 27_laughing.gif27_laughing.gif27_laughing.gif
