Scratches and gouges in new 2005 nickels

6 posts in this topic

I have ordered roll sets of the 2005 Ocean In View nickels from the U.S. Mint as well as sets with uncirculated nickels. One thing I noticed is the numerous scratches and gouges on the uncirculated nickels. Even those being sold on cable television are being shown with them. Anyone have input as to why so many are coming out in this condition?

Too much open field? They can't make enough of them to go around because people are hoarding them? Quality control is not what it used to be?

I've noticed all the dings and scratches as well, even on ones from US Mint directly. Of course it makes it hard to find anything above MS62...

They may be "uncirculated" but they do not receive the special handling that is being used for the SMS Sets. To be honest, I think some of the Mint employees hate their jobs and take it out on the product.

I wouldn't be overly suprised.Don't they use shovels in the transfering of coins?

Yeah, the same ones they used to dig the Panama Canal.

I think that they use Caterpillar hydraulic backhoes instead of shovels. The nickels that I have looked at are pretty bad. I guess that means that nice ones (if there is such a thing) will have a big premium in the future.
