Guess the grade: 1864-L Indian Head cent (DIALUPPERS: 94Kb jpeg)

Any IHC from 1864 is a favorite of mine. I like all three varieties for the year. The coin shown below was sold to a customer early this year, and unbekonwnst to me, he subsequently sent it in to NGC/NCS for certification. Care to guess the NGC (or NCS) grade?

James----It should be in an NCS slab and not NGC. Its grade should be a F--VF details but cleaned. It definitely has been messed with. But, in this day and time, I bet NGC put it into a slab---after NCS curated it-- and called it a VF20-25. If I am right, it just proves that YOU MUST BUY THE COIN AND NOT THE HOLDER. Harsh! Murderous. smile.gif

I think they called it an AU something. Plenty of detail left on the little lady.

The answer is: NGC VF-35.

I sold this coin uncertified to my customer at my grade of VF-20, and it was my opinion that the woodgrain toning is original (that the coin had not been cleaned) and attractive. As a matter of fact, it almost seems as if NGC bumped up the grade due to the eye-appeal, which again, I personally thought to be excellent.

As it turns out, I had this coin in my Whitman Classic album for at least five years. If it had ever been cleaned, then maybe it had time enough to retone properly.

THANKS for the guesses and opinions!

Ooh! I should remember that. I have an IH in an ANACS holder that would be a gorgeous MS64RD (at least!) but for the fact that ANACS (picky little devils they) graded it "Recolored." I am torn, particularly since I am concerned that if I just break it out, it might slab with NGC as is and popping it into cardboard or kraft paper for a couple of years might put it at risk for abrasion. Does anyone with experience with these coins have any suggestions?
