1908 Indian $2.50 question

5 posts in this topic

Would the readers of this forum be good enough to examine any 1908-P Indian $2.50 pieces they have, and determine if their coin has normal or medal-turn die alignment? I would like to know about any medal-turn pieces encountered.

Thanks!

Thanks for the replies.

One 1908 quarter eagle trial piece was accidentally put into circulation by Mint Director Frank Leach. This piece has the dies oriented medal-turn. The design and edge are normal, although it would probably be better struck than 99% of the available specimens.

As to the strike: If you are thinking of the shoulder of the eagle that really isn't a strike problem. It was a die problem in that the original dies didn't have the detail later dates had in the series. You'll also find a few 08-P half eagles with the same problem.

It makes it real difficult sometimes to tell a worn piece from a MS piece since in this case the wear and the strike problem are in the same area. tonofbricks.gif
