Mylar Flips: SaFlips vs. Saf-T- Flips

4 posts in this topic

I am a collector of brazilian coins and I am looking for an archival safe way to store and display my collection. Since air-tites are very expensive, I consider archival safe flips the best way considering my budget. When I was looking for them, I came across two kinds of flips:

1) At JP´s corner and others:

Saflips are made of Mylar and suitable for long-term protection. They contain no oils or other additives, will not corrode or cloud your coins like other flips can, and are packaged in poly bags to keep them free from contamination.

Saflips are used by the American Numismatic Association, Princeton University, Art Museums and libraries of Cornel, the University of Michigan, and many others

2) At Brent-Krueger and others:

2"x2" Saf-T-Flips (100 per pack) with inserts. Crystal clear, made from archival prolar polyester for optimum safety. PVC-free and safe for long-term storage.

I would like to know if these flips are the same (I do not know if prolar polyester is just the chemical name for the brand mylar ® ) or if they are different. In case they are different, does anyone have experience with Saf-T-flips? Are they really safe for long term storage (I mean really long, 20 years or more)/

Yours sincerely,

Antonio Leandro Nascimento

Both kinds of flips will be free of PVC which is the biggest concern when storing coins inside flips. These holders will not be air tight which will allow substances outside the holder to potentially leave residues on your coin. To put coin holders in a bad-good-better-best category, the holders you are considering would be good. An air tight holder would be better. A hemetically sealed "slab" such as an NGC or NCS holder would be best. A flip with PVC would be bad.
