Mintage vs. Sales

I am looking for information regarding the number of particular coins that were sold by the U.S. Mint.

 

I have found that the number of some coins that were Minted varies from the number of those coins that were sold.

 

I tried "googling" but all I could find was "Mintage" information.

 

Can anyone tell me where I can find information on how many (of particular mintages) were actually sold? - or is this a Secret or something?

I don't collect modern mint products, but I seem to recall that there was an article in Coin World a few years ago that said that the Mint was ceasing to report sales figures for items like proof Eagles, etc.

 

On the other hand, I also seem to recall having seen some articles in Coin World that do discuss sales for some of the recent commems.
