ANR Balto. Auction Dec.6th and 7th

Hello Folks----Looks like a lot of fine material to be had. I have a "special" interest in this one as I discovered 4 rare tokens for a friend. Had them graded and slabbed by NGC. It took months and months to make the ANR catalogue. They are lots 165, 174, 175 and 176. For all you civil war token collectors, these are R8 and R9 rarity coins. Never "made" coins like this before. Knew very little about tokens. Had to buy the books first. Gives me a thrill to help this non-collector and to put these rare coins into collector hands. Have any of you had similar experiences with unknown coins to you----out of your normal area of expertise? Bob [supertooth]

Hello Hayden----I wish that I could give a guess in value. This lady just sent me her coins in the mail. I have never met her in person. But I helped her on Ebay----and I guess I must have sounded trustworthy. Anyway, I knew that they were odd pieces. Also knew that I had never seen anything like them. Found the Steamer token in Rulau's book---but hers is an 1810. Believed that I had found a "unique" token. The others were almost as rare---after I bought the additional token books. I am convinced there are not many around. But I got them graded and slabbed for her at NGC. Now the ANR auction will see how truly rare they really are as others will decide that. My guess on money? Could be quite a lot to the "right" people. Might be a once in a lifetime chance to own it. People will pay a lot to have the only one----or one of only a few. If it was a Walker, I could get real close for you. These things are out of my area of expertise. I am curious to find out where they will end up. Needless to say---I hope that she does well. Might add that I have taken nothing----have asked for nothing----and will take nothing for my services. This lady is a wonderful soul who knows nothing of coins. I have had the priviledge of seeing these pieces and in a sense----discovering them. It has been a pleasure to have been of help. Bob [supertooth]

Fabulous history! Both, what you did, Bob, and also that which has been written about the tokens at ANR! Just outstanding.

Listen, if at all possible, check out the C. E. Bullowa auction in Philadelphia on

Sunday, December 4th. Some of the raw stuff is beyond great. There's a 1795 Flowing Hair Dollar that looks just incredible in the catalogue.

Nothing in this auction excites me. Perhaps I have too narrow a collecting focus.

There is only one coin in the B&M auction in which I have an interest.

Good Day To All Of You-----Was amazed at the prices that my friend's tokens got last night. To me it just proves that----if you do your homework and prepare the items for sale [get them slabbed]----if you place them with people who will research and give them their proper attention [ANR did a marvelous job]---Well Folks, you usually will do well if the items themselves are worthy. Lot #165 realized 700----Lot #174 got 1300----Lot # 175 got 1900 and finally lot # 176 realized 480 This for a very nice lady who originally would have sold them to me for 50 cents apiece. I am pleased to say that she thinks that Christmas came early into her life this year. As for me, I have learned a lot----about civil war tokens but better yet----to never give up on yourself or your dreams no matter how old that you are. Have a nice day all you NGC board members.
