an absurd question regarding NON "dcam" proofs

9 posts in this topic

What is the latest date of coins generally available as brilliant proofs, in other words NOT DCAM? For example, I have never seen a proof 1979 SBA that wasn't a DCAM. But I have encountered a few Kennedy halves from the mid 1970s that had little to no DCAM contrast.

Any ideas??

The reason I'm asking is because I would like to extend my Washington quarter and Kennedy half proof runs as far as possible. However, I only collect NON dcam proofs, and want to match all the later coins with what I have so far. My Washington quarters stop in 1972, and the Kennedy halves stop at 1973.

This question is far from my area of expertise, however, I think the early '70s saw a newer uniformity in the proof process that allowed greater numbers of coins to be DCAM and CAM. The year may be different according to the denomination.

I owned two NGC PR69 Ikes that had NO cameo whatsoever.

Pure, glassy fields and devices. It was actually a very attractive set of coins and I wish now I had kept them.

I believe that finding proof pieces with no cameo from 1971 onward is quite difficult, but not impossible from 1971-79. It may be veritably impossiblefrom 1980-.

In my experience as a grader, I have run across coins from as late as a few years ago that were not Ultra and some that were not even cameo.

Wow.

Some of the '83 to date coins would prove to be extremely tough though I don't know which since I don't pay much attention to it. Very few of the '83-'98 coins would be "easy".

Good luck.

OK, I know that this next statement should be on the BST forum, but since this thread is already here.....

I'll pay a significant premium for proofs minted after 1973 that do NOT have CAM contrast, if anyone has some to unload.
