A New Quarter Eagle Purchase.

12 posts in this topic

My new gold coin collecting interest is going in the direction of obtaining 1879-S and earlier Quarter Eagles. Shown is my first acquisition, an 1879-S, PCGS-AU55 coin. These are quite scarce in mint state. NGC has certified (9) coins in MS grades.

Great looking piece, Charlie. Collectable grade too. I can't wait to see your Civil War dated pieces and your 1848 CAL! popcorn.gif

Thanks guys for the kudos, I think the coin is almost a slider but the high points do show definite slight rubbing. The services are grading so tight now that it is a good time to take advantage if you can. I will try to build off this as the opportunity arises. I also think the earlier Coronet Quarter Eagles are not fully appreciated for their scarcity in higher AU grades. Many are almost condition rarities in AU58.

An excellent coin Charlie, and it sounds like you've once again come across a very interesting collecting angle! I think it would be hard to underestimate the rarity of so many quarter eagles especially before 1890.

I agree, Jeff. I can not afford the Charlotte and Dahlonega Quarter Eagles, but many of the pre-Civil War "O" mint, "S" mint coins from the 1870's and Civil War date "P" mint coins are under $1000. in higher AU grades. I think that these are sleepers.

I agree, and the reason in my mind is because so few collectors are amassing dates sets of the series. Most collectors are happy with one coin for type, so they select a high-grade common date. Plus, before the 1880s and 1890s, these coins actually circulated! It seems most in the late 19th and certainly the 20th century, most quarter eagles stayed in unc. after being given as birthday, wedding, graduation and all manner of other gifts. Heck, just look at the 1854-S that just surfaced, one of the finest known and it's only XF!

That coin pictured is not in an NGC holder, looks like PCGS. Nice coin.

I agree with you on the desireability of the quarter eagle in the earlier years.Last week I bought an 1874 in NGC AU58PL.

If I knew how to post a picture of it on this forum I would. The CU board I can manage but I have no clue on this board.

My mistake, I bought a NGC MS64 Half Eagle on the same day and mixed the two in my mind during a senior moment. The Quarter eagle is in a PCGS holder. The half eagle is NGC.

You can upload the images to Photobucket.com and then highlight, copy and paste the image (marked .....in Photobucket) onto this site. It is really pretty simple that way.
