Your Coin Club

17 posts in this topic

Do you all attend your local coin club meetings regularly? What do you all do there and is it any fun?

I know at some club meetings it is just a miniture show, and at others they have speakers, etc. My club starts out like a board meeting, with reading of minutes, old and new business, announcements etc. Then there is a speaker (sometimes boring as heck) and a small auction with usually a bunch of junk... I'm looking for ideas to put a little spark in my club. What say you?

There's one here in Urbana or Rantoul. I've never considered going and probably never will. Just always sounds like something where it would feel like a vacume is on my head and or soul. I like being by myself and the coins work perfectly with that! cloud9.gif

I go to my coin club meeting every month, and I enjoy it, but like you we have been looking for things to liven it up a bit. My meetings sound pretty close to yours by the way. One of the things we added was a portable bulletin board to post articles of news and events. We are also trying to add a regular member presentation on what we focus on, or are more expert in. I think I might do a presentation on the history of the double eagle, incorporating all the types including paper money from wildcat notes to FRNs. We also watch videos on occasion, last meeting it was one on the National Bank Note museum in Iowa. There has also been talk of giving presentations at local retirement homes, though I think it would be a better idea to give one at local schools. We also sponsor a local show every spring, so a lot of work goes into that, as members and junior members work hard on exhibits which are displayed at the show. It would be interesting to see what other ideas are out there that we might incorporate here.

We have a club here in St. Louis that meets the first Friday of every month. I never miss a meeting if at all possible!

From talking to other people, it seems like our club is real similar to most others. Meetings go from around 6:00 - 10:00. Anyone can set up a table and offer coins for sale or trade, there's a couple hours of "bourse" time, then an auction of some 50 - 60 lots typically. The auction material is usually pretty bad, but hey, it's all for fun, right? And I HAVE gotten some really good deals from the auctions.

Every attendee get's entered into that day's raffle of three prizes, which usually are a proof set, or some other cheap freebie. Prize drawing occurs at the end of the meeting, and I've won a couple of times. One thing our club does do is provide free soda to all attendees.

Our club is stoically attended, with perhaps 75 members coming every night, and I really have made a lot of friends this way. Again, from talking with other people, it sounds like our club is a bit more advanced than some others, but I do feel like I make a real contribution as well, so it pays off.

Yes, I forgot to mention, our club meetings go from 7:00 to 9:00 or 9:30, we have a member raffle where we pull a member's name out of a hat, one for regular, one for life members and one for junior members. Then we also have a regular raffle where they sell tickets 3 for a dollar and draw names for prizes. I've won three or four common date silver dollars from the raffles over the last year. We also have a break time at the midpoint of the meeting with coffee, pop and doughnuts. The leftover doughnuts are always put in as a lot in the auction.

I can't wait... the fishing here has definitely gone downhill. tongue.gif

I'll start a coin club highlighting all the great foreign material that Greg and James have sold me.

I have a friend from Argentina who plays 3-cushion billiards with us every Saturday. He told me that the coin shops, there, are run by thieves who get their inventory by robbing the foreigners. J/K!

If the fishing has gone downhill, why don't you move into the valley? Just watch out for heavy rains during the spring thaw.

I started a coin club in my new town of Frederick this year. I used to belong to the Central Florida Coin club which was huge. Frederick had nothing. I passed out some flyers at local shows to get the word out. Now we have once a month meetings. So far, we have no expenses or club dues. People can come to buy and sell but we are too small for auctions. Local coin club auctions are usually pretty bad so I don't think we are missing anything there. We do have a nice program every month which are amazing for such a small club. Here is what we have been doing:

August: Pattern coins with 10 rare US patterns

Sept: Counterfeit detection of the 1909-S VDB with 2 of the real coins

Oct: Washington medals including a 1791 pattern cent

Never been to a coin club. There is one for my areas but I don't think I'd fit in very well judging from the local coin show.

I guess that I'm just too darn antisocial 'cause I've never been to one either.

Antisocial? What are you talking about? Nobody could put up with you!

I'd rather be called that "A" word than the one that you're called. blush.gif
