Real or fake 1804 Silver dollar?

15 posts in this topic

The fact it looks nothing like a real 1804 $. In fact, it bears only a slight resemblance to a real Bust dollar of this era.

Here is a picture of a real one:

My thoughts on it were, if you were going to go through the effort of making a fake, why would you make it so obviously different (size and shape of starts, distance of liberty to edge of coin, ridges on edge of coin being farther from edge than real...)

So I was hoping that it was special in some other way. Perhaps a type of coin that was not the normal 1804 amazing one we've all seen. I can't even tell what coin he used as his reference to make the fake from if it's fake. It looks that much different.

Stuff like this is frequently made in Asia for tourists or as play money. It's not meant to fool a collector, but rather to be sold as a token replica.

Yes, after careful study and close analysis I see the stars are just a tad bit too small.

I've also got to go with it being a possible fake, I think.

Sending it to NGC would be your best confirmation. I'd recommend overnight service/ walk-through for the coin's safety and security and for your peace of mind.

I'm surprised you didn't suggest flying to NGC so not to risk losing it in the mail.

GCL?

The Hope Diamond was sent via USPS registered mail.

His 1804 dollar should be fine. . . 893scratchchin-thumb.gif

Now, looking again, I think it's possible it may have been gently cleaned. If so NGC may have difficulty getting it into a slab.

I'd try this! cloud9.gif

I'm being offered this coin for megamoney,

I'm glad that you had the wisdom to check with knowledgeable collectors first. The whole idea that there are such shiesters out there still infuriates me even though I know that they will always exist.

Was it a coindealer, an individual or an e-bayer that offered it to you?
