Blue spots on 1976 silver proof set

5 posts in this topic

I recentley purchased a 1976 40% silver Bicentennial proof set in OGP. After looking at the coins, i saw some white dots with blending blue borders. I tooke out my LED light and saw these clearly. I showed it to one of my friends who is also a collector and he did not know what this problem was. I have scanned the coin but they did not come out so well because the coin is still in the case provided by the OGP. The clearest example is the red arrow with the blue star. Any comments would be very helpful.

Here is a 1974-S, PCGS, PR69DCAM Ike that also has the blue haze that you show in your scan. The Mint must have used a plasticizer in the mint set holder that is causing this color change. I have heard of others having the same problem.

The Ikes always seem to have a haze problem. It's one reason why people dip them to death to get rid of the haze.

OT3,

That's a cool looking coin. Looks like Ike is in outer space. It fits with the Apollo XI reverse. wink.gif
