trip down (TeleTrade) memory lane - told in pictures: ca. 1991 DIALUPPERS BEWARE

10 posts in this topic

You'll remember that I did a recent appraisal of a collection that had many early-generation slabs in it. Here are some quick, cheap sample images. Remember, this gentleman bought these coins back when live TeleTrade bidding was done exclusively over the phone. I've tried to capture how it all was done in 1991, though of course, there are later purchases in the collection. Note the stickers on the back of each slab indicating when he bought the coins, and cross-referencing the sale it came out of. Sorry for the crummy images, but Enjoy anyhow!

Wow I didn't know they had ICG back in 1991 poke2.gif

Also look at those low auction numbers # 351 893whatthe.gif were up into the 2000's now.

Are most or all of the slabs mark free? flowerred.gif

Have you ever had any experience like this before?

That is really neat thanks for sharing thumbsup2.gif

My daughter started out bidding in Teletrade Auctions in 1987 when they were using Video Cassettes for their lots. I was going to throw them out, but for some reason she wanted to keep them and I became the storage ware house as usual.

I remember all those. I even remember them selling pre-graded NGC coins in flips. Teletrade was a novel idea back then, but they've really fallen behind the times now with no descriptions and a slow computer system.

Still, I'm sure the company is run much better today than back then. Based on the stories I heard, I had a major problem with their ethics.

I used to bid with them using the phone (using the leaflet you'd get in the mail...as per James photo...circa 1992) and I found their "descriptions" incredibly lame. So you are really saying they haven't changed much at all?

BTW, Art, what was on those videos? The coins I hope. 893whatthe.gif

You'd be surprised what went on with those descriptions... 893scratchchin-thumb.gif

No, it had a shyster in a hawaiian shirt holding the coin so that you couldn't see it and talking about how it was a pop top.

Maybe you should try the same with your eBay auctions? Do you own a Hawaiian shirt? 893scratchchin-thumb.gif If not, you could borrow one from Truth.
