Flood water in proof sets!

4 posts in this topic

I received this from a person that got flood water in his proof sets and wants to know what to do. I told him that I would post his question here!

I had many proof sets that recieved flood damage (the water went into the sets-lousy seals by the mint!). I'm trying to determine the best way to handle this. Leave them alone and hope the water eventually dries out (I doubt it!)? I think I may have to crack them open but I really don't want to do that. I just don't know what to do!

If you can throw that out on the board, I would very much appreciate it. Or if you have any advice to, I'm willing to listen.

Thanks;

Eddie

Crack them, dip them, and dry them in acetone. Who knows what chemicals were in the flood water. While the water might dry in his sets, the damage could show up later.

He should not have waited. Every set should be opened and cleaned. It doesn't injure the value of the coins to do this but the sets will be face value if it's not done.

A few of the mint sets can survive brief inundation; not the proof sets.
