New To Boards-Indian Head Cents

24 posts in this topic

Hi,

I am new to this. I have a bunch of indian head cents from 1859-1865. I also found some coins from the 1700's. How do I figure the value. I do not know where they are from or what conditions they have endured. I do know they have been in a wooden box for years and I never did anything with them, but now I would like to sell them. I also found $2 bills. Any suggestions?

Thank you.

While it sounds like you aren't thinking of cleaning just making sure I get the point across grin.gif to many nice coins have allready been cleaned.

kj, If you can post some images, that would be very helpful. Be careful with the coins. Keep them separated from one another so they do not rub or ding each other, and whatever you do, do not try to "improve" them in any way, such as polishing or scrubbing or cleaning them. Some Indian head cents are worth thousands of dollars, but cleaning or altering them in any way can reduce their value by 90%!

Oh, and WELCOME to our friendly little neighborhood!

Oh My, they have been sitting in this box for years. I know nothing of these coins, I knew they were my great-grandfathers but I don't think it was a collection as much as it was like a box were he put his money. They have been together all these years and they do not look like they are in good condition.

Welcome.

If you are using a camera with macro the problem may be camera movement.

If not using macro you might try moving the camera further from the coin.

Just my first thoughts.

Also, if you have to take a photo with no macro, then use a high resolution, then you can crop the photo down to the coin, thus reducing the size. If you have trouble posting here, let us know and perhaps you can email the photos to one of us and we can post for you.

Ok they are all one cents. I have about 60 of them. They are the indian heads. 1864, 1863, 1858. I scanned some now I have to figure out how to put them on here. I only scanned a few, because the camera didn't show anything. I just want to show you a little of what I have. They are basically all in the same condition. Keep in mind I scanned these fast, so if the dates are missing or half the head is missing this is why.

Thanks

Hi and welcome. hi.gif The easiest way is simply to make sure the "I want to preview my post and/or attach a file" box is checked (the options appear below the instant gremlins). When you click the "continue button," you will have the opportunity to browse and to import the image file from your hard drive. After you select the file, you can post the message, and the word "attachment" will appear at the top of your post. Other members will be able to click on the "attachment link" of your post to view the image.

Don't worry about embedding the photos in the message itself until after you become a little more familiar with the boards.

If your looking to sell these you can list them on the BST here and see if anyone wants to buy. To list on ebay you'll need to get some better pics. Or you could take them to a coin store and get an estimate, be prepaired for a very low estimate.

best thing to do is make a list of the years and demonitations....then post the list... the 1859 Indian you posted looked at least VF(Very Fine) from the picture.... which has a book value of about $40.00 the 1863 looks (G)Good to (VG)Very Good Valued from $7.00 to $10.00 .... Pick the one you think is the best and scan it... and we will try to help you.... good luck....

Thank you so very much. I am not a coin collector but came across these. It isn't that I just want to unload these but I worry I will end up losing them. I will put them on here tomorrow, but I truely appreciate your All of your help. Thanks again

kj, the two coins you posted, though not extremely valuable, are not junk, either, and it is entirely possible you have some better coins, whether you realize it or not. I strongly urge you to get at least three professional opinions on the lot, whether you want to sell them or not. In the event that you have, for example, an 1877 in the same condition as either of the coins you displayed, it could be worth $1000 by itself! Therefore, you might want to insure what you have, or move the coins to a more secure environment.

Good Luck!

James
