I agree with Laura. When things get to the point that I am very nervous about buying (sight-unseen) a MS65 TPG coin, something in the system is broken. I have gone through a few of the highly ranked gold registry sets recently, the ones that have pictures. One problem is that there are not many top sets that even have images and secondly, in some sets with images, the MS65/66 even MS67 certified coins are inferior to what was a MS65 coin (5) years ago.

Coins at these high grade levels are very expensive and their surfaces, strikes and general appearance should rivet your attention when you look at them. This is not what I am seeing. In the collector level (MS63/65) arena where I normally purchase coins, the picture is pretty dismal. Virtually all MS62 coins are AU. Even some MS63 coins are AU or have surface problems that a MS63 coin should not have. Plus, MS65 coins are dirty or have surface and strike problems that coins with this grade should not have.

Gradflation is a double wammy because coin prices have risen greatly in five years, plus coins are not graded to the same baseline standard of a few years ago. I really am not interested in cracking out coins and playing that game. I just would like a little better break in grading for coins that the vast majority of collectors buy.

He and I are going to have a meeting in Las Vegas this upcoming week to discuss the topic. And he has agreed to answer ANY question I ask

She would be ill advised to go on a car ride into the desert with him.
