Why are CC's so popular? Did a certain event happen? I know that the popularity has increased in recent years, but what caused it? Fat coin collecting nerds who have never had a date, but feel like men by holding a piece of the old west? 893scratchchin-thumb.gif

Why are CC's so popular?

There are probably some who think it is chic to collect anything with a big pricetag. As for me, I just like the mintmark.

Personally I like CC dates because I think the best DMPLs are CC coins...

They are popular because the Morgan series is popular. The last estimate I heard was over 1 million collectors. If you are trying to put together a date and mm set, you need them.

Let's look at 1881....9 million Philly coins

5.7 million New Orleans

12.7 San Fran

296,000 Carson City

Looks to me like 700,000 collectors will never own a 1881CC. That makes them very desirable and expensive.

1. Short dollar series to collect, with a large following.

2. Set has several scarce or rare coins for such a short set, but is still cheaper than other MM Morgan sets.

3. Morgans are about the only CC denomination that is accessible to many collectors (try collecting CC Dimes or Eagles).

I've collected Morgans since te 60's and hate to bust your bubble but they've always been popular. Even when they were in circulation, they had a premium.

Nowdays, I'd guess people like the short 13 coin set over trying to get all 97 + varieties Morgans (at $100000 for AU/MS), plus the 80's/90/91CC's are easy to get since the GSA releases.
