Created a new forum in comics land, wondered if it would fly here...

Would a "grade this" folder be wanted here?

Basically, they have a fair amount of traffic on the comic boards of members simply posting scans of their books and asking other members to grade them. There's some debate back and forth about why certain grades are chosen, etc.. After awhile, these threads were driving more substantive conversations off of the page and that was a problem; however, there was still alot of value in people educating each other about grading. So I created a separate forum for it so that people could post asking for opinions without feeling like they were imposing, and those who like grading could get crazy with responding.

I was just wondering if there would be interest in the coin folders in starting that kind of a forum? Feel free to check out the "Grade THIS, buddy." forum in the comics area to get a feel for how it's working out.

Arch, you left out one option............... Great idea! I can learn a lot from this.

Solid idea.......when I was still doing the comic book thing I used to provide grading opinions to collectors all the time. Having a section for coin junkies would just add another demension to these boards 893applaud-thumb.gif

I really like the idea and think maybe it would draw more people to post that want to get opinions on their coin but haven't wanted to start a thread in the other coin related forums.

Couldn't hurt to give it a try. 893scratchchin-thumb.gif

It'd probably be somewhat popular, but I'm not sure if it would be a good idea to have a forum on it. I'm not sure why stuff like this couldn't fit into Numismatic Tangents forum.

Also, grading from a picture is extremely difficult and not accurate and (in my personal and probably minority opinion) probably should not be encouraged.

Yeah. In comics the need for a new forum was because of the volume of requests. In coins part of the reason to do it would be to draw those requests and thus the activity and community value.

It could also provide a single place to draw together world and U.S. coins... and maybe paper money too?

I've got to agree with Greg. There's just no compelling reason to do this with the volume in coin talk traffic being so low. Posts are already made on coin grading in the tangents, US coins, and world coins forums, and they don't take up much space. And like Greg says, it's easy to be way off on a coin grade from a pic.

Greg.......Hoot........I agree that is hard to grade from pictures, but just what other means do you have when you are bidding in online auctions. If someone, here, can learn to pick up on telltale signs it can only help them in the long run. There have been numerous instances of members of these boards pointing out characteristics that I never would have noticed.

do it a great itea for another forum and many will come on here and evehn the lurkers will join as since price seems to be the major coin concern which it is as you got to buy and sell coins to enjoy them just ask all the people on the pcgs boards!!

also to get a price you got to be able to figure out the worth of a coin which is lotsa more than grade but grade is a great and important starting point

get this gradeing us coin forums up and running

sounds good to me

i will definately look at it and post a few new threads every week and also post replies

nothing ventured nothing gained

so i say GFI or go for it thumbsup2.gif

Modify the Coin Tangent forum to allow this. I wouldn't invent another forum though.

It's true you can't accurately grade by picture. Then again, the TPG's have showed time and again they can't accurately grade by sight-seen inspection either. yeahok.gif

I don't see anything wrong with using a thread to determine a "rough" grade/value to a coin. However, I don't really see adding a whole forum to do it either. Coin Tangents is good enough.

There are so few new posts in the coin sections that at this rate we might as well have a new forum for every post.

I would prefer to have the grade requests in a separate section just for organizations sake. This forum is certainly not too busy to grade coins. Plus I am not being crass, but the please grade my "problem" whatever coin and please grade this Ebay fuzzy image coin requests could benefit by being separate where they would be discretionary viewing for other Board members.
