Help needed with this 1861 cent...

Here is nice problem free example that I grade an AU-50(but will listen to your opinions as well) however as you can see in the picture it has several un-attractive carbon spots on the coin.I was wondering what could be done to remove these spots without damaging the coin? Would I be able to dip the spots off,since it's only a 25% copper coin?

First, it's an 88% copper coin ya dork. Second, given your remarks regarding Dena in your reply to midwest in another post, you deserve to go to hell. Third, your cowasaki thing is worse that Shane's humongous sig line. Fourth, if that's a picture of you on the cowasaki, then you've ruined all images I had of you that your conversations with Chris had generated - this is a bad thing. Fifth, you should send your cent to NCS to stablize the spots.

NCS can help but I do not believe a dip will work with that kind of coin. I've experimented with different compositions and didn't like the effect of dipping on anything but silver.

ncs will do a good job on this coin but it will still show the spots but lighter and also the spots have a better than average chance to come back in a year or so

 

in my opinion it is not worth it to send to ncs and you cant really dip it as ncs will not dip it but just work on the spots and then possible lighten the coin to make it more acceptible

 

just leave it as is and in my opinion i would not want this coin in my collection

Those are a problem.

 

I don't believe you can remove those spots from that coin. Try acetone, or Blue Ribbon, but I don't think you are going to have much luck.

 

You may want to check your composition percentages, as well.

Come on now guys lay off a little

TDN and Darin,I was referring to the lack of scratches or damage to the coin as to it being problem-free.I don't consider spots like these a problem but rather a removeable distraction.Anyhow thanks for all your input everyone. I don't think I'll do anything to it myself since I wouldn't want to make the coin look worse.As to sending it to NCS,it probably wouldn't be worth the trouble since it would only be that one coin and I'd probably want NGC to certify while it was in there.Who knows maybe if I can find one more coin I'll send in a duo...

Just have it sent back raw. I often do this even if I'm planning on sending the coin in for grading later.
