20th century coin designers

6 posts in this topic

I was just wondering. Anyone out there collect the works of the coin designer beyond just the coins. For example, medals, sculptures, art, etc. of St Gaudens, Adolph Weinman, or James Fraser, etc. From time to time I run into medals or artwork of coin designers and can't help but get interested in the look of their individual work and end up acquiring them because I think they're neat. If you do, got pics?

No, not yet; but, I've toyed with the idea of looking for a print that Longacre engraved (or the 4-volume set of "The National Portrait Gallery of Distinguished Americans" published at Philadelphia 1839 by Longacre and James Herring).

Edited to add: Oops! I overlooked the "20th century" part in the subject line.

I have one of the rectangular bronze plaques of Lincoln that Brenner did in 1907. The same bust was used for the cent.

I like Frank Gasparro's work (and others as well) but do not typically collect by engraver or designer. I have Gasparro's 1969 ANA medals. Wish the design had become the effigy for the small dollar of 1979. (Although it too would have died in circulation due to competition with the dollar bill.)

I own many small plaquettes and medals from these artists and find them fascinating and relatively affordable. Similar to David, I also own one of the Brenner plaquettes of Lincoln and it is very cool.

I had always wanted that one! I have one which he (VDB) did in 14K Gold for the "National Academy of Design Award" in 1909.
