1873 Trade Judd 1293 ANACS PR64 from Heritage. What is the general thought re sending to NCS for a bath??? Does it wreck the coin?

That's a coin I'd be hard pressed to mess with. It looks fantastic to me, just as it is. One of Longacre's many standard dollar pattern coins.

Does it wreck the coin

Please, please, (and please again) do not dip this coin. True conservation does not appear necessary to prevent degradation of the coin's surfaces; and, from my point of view, a bath would remove both the character of coin and natural protection that the patina provides. I can't describe the disappointment I feel when I finally find a rarity that I've searched for only to discover that it's been stripped.

I don't know if dipping would "wreck" the coin (especially since a large segment of the market appears to prefer that old coins look new), but it certainly carries the potential to do so. See Newmismatist's first post in this thread.

Edited to add: BTW, congrats on your acquisition -- it's a wonderful coin.

Congrats on getting a cool pattern as your first one. I don't think conservation can do much for this one. I think the toning is too dark. You can send it in to NCS for evaluation to see what they think but I had a Morgan with a similar color I sent to them and they returned it as being unsuitable for conservation.

Fletch, I'm no expert by any stretch of the imagination, but I like it just the way it is!

Congratulations on a cool find! thumbsup2.gif

I guess I'm going to go against the majority here, but I don't like the look of the toning at all. Too dark, blah, and dirty looking. I'd much prefer lighter toning or a brilliant coin.

Perhaps the coin looks much better in person. confused-smiley-013.gif

BTW, I'm a big toning fan.

I agree and am grateful Greg was the first (and bravest) to admit it. NCS would turn your Pattern into a sparkling monster.

I know not every coin benefits from NCS and I know the "look" of NCS coins can be out of favor with some, but this one's the exception.

Without even commenting on the possible bump up in grade, this is one coin that would be stunning blast white and who knows? There might be a bit of cameo frost hiding there too.

Just curious, Fletcher, is there a reason you switched from ChannelIslands to Fletcher? 893scratchchin-thumb.gif

Yes, I just moved from the Channel Islands to San Francisco.

I agree that it's unattractive but it just looks too dark for a conservation. If it was lighter but still ugly I'd also recommend a good dip.

I guess a question would be: is there any luster underneth the toning? If so, it might be OK to dip.

But there is something to be said for some originality.

I'd definitely send it to NCS for at the very least an estimate as to what they can do. I've seen dogs come out champions. I like your coin for the most part, but, it is a bit dark toned for my tastes. None the less, congrat.s on a respectable purchase.

Generally I can't stand dipped "stuff", but this isn't a very attractive coin.. The question is whether the luster is still there under the toning. I don't think you can tell without the coin in hand. As much as I don't like white coins, perhaps there is a middle ground and NCS can evaluate the coin's potential. I presume that it was a bargin anyway or you wouldn't have bought it--and it won't cost much to see what NGC/NCS say.
