What is this coin...

Hello all.

 

I'm wondering if anyone has a cleaning suggestion for an old coin I found when I was walking home from school some 25 years ago. From what I can tell, it's from the 1800's, either a half penny or penny, and it has a wreath type picture on the back. I'm not looking to clean it to sell or anything, but I'd really like to know what it is exactly without completely ruining it. It has solid buildup of some sort on it that has become part of the coin, so the buildup is obstructing the majority of the coins marks. Anyone have any suggestions?

Well, cleaning is not a good idea but since it is circulated I suggest getting some goo gone and letting the coin soak in that for a while and then carefully removing the surface contaminants with a toothpick. As for identifying, you can probably identify it using this site
