Can a US coinee help please?

10 posts in this topic

I'm sure this is very old news in the US, but there was a story in the UK papers today about a woman who has had £42m worth of coins seized by the mint.

She sent them off for authentication, but the mint told her that they are forefeit and liable to be melted down. The story mentions 10 1933 double eagles stating that these are where the value lays.

I'm a comic man, but the story really intrigues me. Why exactly are the mint so aggressive here and are these double eagles really worth £4.2m ($7.5m) each?

If you have a link to an already extant thread, that would be great. Thanks.

Thanks. thumbsup2.gif

So effectively these are worthless as you could never legally sell one (openly), without the Feds busting the door down?

My piece was a very small capsule article in the Daily Telegraph and all the info was included in gmarguli's thread link.

Nope, no foreign this set of auctions. The next set should have some average foreign. Then the good stuff after that.

BTW, noticed you bidding on a couple of them. Interesting choices...

Yes, I have a thing with bust halves. Just like the Pan Pac. Speaking of which, there's a super nice PCGS MS64 that will be auctioned in the next Goldberg's auction. Any chances that you will attend? I think it's a pre-Long Beach auction. If you will, please LMK.
