Early 70s Framed Coin Sets?

8 posts in this topic

Question for the coinees...

My Grandfather has a number of framed sets of coins that were probably bought in the early 70s (1972 perhaps). The sets are the following:

Lincoln Memorial Coins - Looks like it's a set of all Lincolns struck from 1959-1972.

The Silver Story - Talks about silver used in coins. Has a 1899 Liberty Silver Dollar, silver granules, 1943 Nickel, 1944 Mercury Silver dime, and a 1957 paper Silver Dollar.

Wartime Coinage - WWII Nickel and Pennies to include a silver Penny.

United States 20th Century Coins - Too many to list. Pretty much has examples of all coins struck in the 20th Century. Also includes a Bronze Apollo Moon program coin.

Anyone familiar with these sets? Are these worth much? Is there a reference on-line to find out on my own?

Thanks,

Jim

Welcome to the boards! 1st off its a steel Pennie not silver. Most sets like that they made a lot of and didnt allways use the best coins, most of them where common dates. I dont know of any book to check the value but you can see if there are any like the ones you have on ebay and see how much they are going for.

Hate to tell you the bad news... but any numastic value the coins(Most Circulated) had has been lost due to the way the coins were put in the frame(They were glued in there).... I have seen all the sets you speak of..... and they are sold as novelty items at coin stores from $10.00 to $20.00 bucks each... every coin in the sets would either Boby Bag(Not Grade) or Net grade at Anacs... They will prolly have more sentamental value then they are worth.... If you were to sell them on ebay I would try $19.99 starting price and let people bid....

I recently looked at a framed 20th century type set of a worker and they were either very common dates or harshly cleaned. They are basically a novelty item only that no knowledgable numismatist would own. They do make good gifts, though.

Yes I forgot to mention a good portion of the coins were cleaned
