Help needed: Southeast? Asian coin with Chinese (obv.) and unknown script (rev.)

9 posts in this topic

Hello,

I don't see many Asian coins discussed here but maybe someone can give me a hint from which country this coin may come from? I got it from Lombok but the -script on the reverse side doesn't seem to be one of those used on Bali or Java.

The obverse side obviously is in Chinese. I can't make out the ideogramm at the bottom which is a bit obscured. (I reckon this one is crucial for dating...)

The -script on the reverse would be vertical when judging from the orientation of the Chinese characters on the obverse. Maybe it needs to be turned, e.g. 90° clockwise?

I'd greatly appreciate any help! Please view attachment to this post if you need larger pics than those displayed below.

Regards,

Kai

Thanks, Redpk!

That's Canton mint, right? What would be the transliteration in Pinyin?

The coin is quite thin, 0.9 mm only! Is it just heavily worn?

The hole is also quite large (6.2/6.5 mm) compared to other Qing coins. I figure this is a very common coin so it's unlikely to be a fake, I guess?

Kai

Yes,you are right,

Canton ,Kuangtung,Guangdong,all right.

Guangdong is the transliteration in Pinyin now.

The coin's name is GuangXuTongBao the transliteration in Pinyin.

It's made by machine in the end of Qing dynasty ,not like other Qing square hole coins made by hand.

I think it's not a fake.

there are another nice condition coin for reference

Thanks again, Redpk!

Was this coin minted till 1908 or when did production stop and got replaced by minting other coins like the new copper ones?

BTW, are the contents of the used alloy known?

Kai

Hello Kai,thats all right

The coin was minted till 1908,becasue the emperor GuangXu died in this year. Some one said he was killed by CiXi queen before the queen died.

The next coin was XuanTongBongBo when the XuanTong become China emperor(China last emperor),
