The US-Philippines Series

13 posts in this topic

I used to be big into the US-Phil coins but that has cooled off a bit. Although I still look for great examples now and then that are raw.

I almost got into collecting them a few years back, but I had trouble finding nicer ones at shows. I like the designs and they are pretty easy on the wallet.

Thanks for the replies. This is my favorite series -- which are both Philippine and US coin issues.

Coins here were minted either in Philadelphia, San Franciso, Denver and from 1920-22 and 1925-41 in Manila (the only US mint outside the US mainland). Mintages and certified populations PALE in comparison compared to their US counterparts: You can get a 1903-S 20c in VF for about $25. Its mintage was a mere 150,000. Now, get a 1916-D mercury dime (mintage 264,000?) in that grade and you pay probably 100 times that. There are more 1909-S VDB cents in RED than the entire population of the US-Philippines centavos from 1903 to 1944.

Speaking of tonelover, yes he is pretty knowledgeable, and he is a great guy to deal with. Check out his site (besides stuff for sale there are some good ariticles)

I have the three 1936 US-Phil commems as part of my classic commemorative collection. At some point I'd like to do a type set of US-Phil, but I'm overextended these days, so that remains in the future.

I have one of the peso coins. Thought it was cool to have a US coin with a peso denomination.Could be a wave of the future.

Here's the only example that I have - a horrible looking cent (about the size of an early half cent) that Greg M. sold me blush.gifwink.gif. It's a very coppery red piece that is quite fetching in every way. A steller piece. 1944-S.

With that attitude I better block you from bidding before I put up some early date US Philippines copper that is toned. Oh, the silver is also toned. juggle.gif

Don't worry, you probably wouldn't like it. It's just your typical nicely toned near gem/gem/superb gem recycled stuff that has been off the market for 30-40 years.

After seeing Tonelover's site a few years back I collected a US/Philippines type set and even got some Spanish colonial coins.

I haven't added to the set in quite a while, but I still enjoy the coins.
