A tale of disappointment

10 posts in this topic

Going thru a old jewelry box I found a small cache of coins that I'd forgotten were there. Mostly unremarkable German coins (pfennings from the early 19th c., thalers and Kreuzers, etc.) and a couple of American coins. One is a Civil War 1864 2 penny coin. Looking it up on the web I got excited when it was described as quite rare. Then read further about the two issues- the 'short motto' one and the 'long motto.' Printed out an image of the 'short motto' coin, grabbed my jeweler's loop and....yup, you guessed it. No luck, it's the 'long motto' one. Siggghhhh. I know it has interest cause it's the first time "In God We Trust" appeared on American currency but couldn't it of had more than historical value?

Welcome to the boards Shell!

Sorry to hear of your disappointment, but it's still a wonderful coin! The large and small motto 1864 2-cent coins are very tricky to pick out, expecially since the motto was one of the first areas to wear out on the coin. In either case, it's still an interesting historical coin, born out of a shortage of small change, and died a mere 8 years later (nine if you count the proofs of 1873). Better luck on your next find!

I finally completed a circulated set from 1864-1872. I LOVE that series!

I have all but the 64 SM, but it was sure a fun set to work on! thumbsup2.gif

actually it is a tale of oppoutunity..........

turn that disappointment into a learning experience and turn that frown into a new positive experience of starting a collection of two cent pieces or other 19th century coinage either circ or even proofs dare by date or a type set or a mintmark set or even a first and last date set

or even a set of better dates!!

even a type set of one of each of 19 th century coinage

a great vlaue set of coinage fun to do and with a long term upswing in demand as all the new collectors mature and realize their true collecting goals and desires

a true journey to the end of the rainbow!!

pre 1915 federal coinaGE biz strike and proof

Yeah, I remember those tales of disappointment. I had a dark side coin where if the width of the date was 5 mm it would be worth hundreds of dollars. If it was 6 mm it would be worth a few bucks. I always hesitated to measure it. I think I finally did and with the inaccuracy of the ruler I had it came to like 5.5mm. Sigh.
