Not a bad list of dealers attending the show. While many seem local, so are east coasters. Notice that ICG & Legend will be there.

I have a feeling it is really a pre-gloomy thread. You'll just post a show report that will be full of gloom and make us all sad. frown.gif

Kennedys aren't coins. They're dead Presidents and drunkin politicians.

"Seems like there's a pretty fair line up of dealers. Anyone know which auction company is handling this show?"

Yes, Ponterio and Associates is having a US/foreign coin auction. I will be attending this. For years, I have wanted to attend a Ponterio auction at Long Beach, but the Heritage auction schedule usually interfered. Now, I will not attend Heritage auctions since the commems are almost always on Sat. Heck, I might even skip Long Beach this time around.

TRUTH: I'll take on the extra responsibility only under one condition. You do NOT, repeat, do NOT miss Long Beach.

There. That's my condition. Who else can I get that "second opinion" from who is honest enough to give it to me?

I've been wondering how this new show would do. It seems "aimed" at the Long Beach show. It is a couple of weeks before the September Long Beach and then occurs again in late January just before the February Long Beach show.

Assuming the lists of dealers on both shows' websites are correct (not a good assumption: I've done LB for a year now and am not on the list; I also see at least a few dealers listed that I don't believe set up at LB anymore), the Anaheim show has a little less than half as many dealers as LB. A little over half of the Anaheim show dealers also do LB.

Some notables that do LB but aren't on the Anaheim list:

AMERICAN NUMISMATIC RARITIES LLC

BOWERS & MERENA GALLERIES, INC.

CARTER NUMISMATICS, INC.

COLEMAN FOSTER

COLLECTOR USA

DAVID HALL'S RARE COINS & COLLECTIBLES

DAVID LAWRENCE RARE COINS

FRED WEINBERG & CO

HARRY LAIBSTAIN RARE COINS

HERITAGE RARE COIN GALLERIES

IRA & LARRY GOLDBERG COINS & COLLECTIBLES

J.H. CLINE

KEVIN LIPTON RARE COINS

LARRY SHEPHERD

LARRY WHITLOW, LTD.

MIKE BYERS

PCGS

PINNACLE RARITIES

R.M. SMYTHE & COMPANY

SHERIDAN DOWNEY

Most of these are high powered dealers who really could care less on the venue, so long as the wholesale business is good. The Anaheim list of dealers rely on retail traffic for their livelihood. Anaheim is a better venue for retail as far as access and parking than Long Beach, admission cost is 1/3, and you have Disneyland across the street. thumbsup2.gif Can you imagine a guy at the coin show ALL DAY while the wife and kids are at Disneyland, a dream come true. 893applaud-thumb.gif In addition, Anaheim is much less on expenses. You can rent a nice hotel room at 1/2 to 1/3 of Long Beach hotels. The smaller midlevel and mom/pop dealers no longer can afford LB tables with fewer and fewer retail customers coming through the door. If Anahem succeeds, Long Beach may be a goner.

I wouldn't go that far. If Anaheim is a hit, you'll likely see shifting dates for these shows so that both succeed. Besides, Anaheim will have the wannabe dealers and Long Beach can have the real dealers.

From what I understand, Long Beach convention center allocates the time to the promotors, and the promoters do not get to pick and choose, so LB is locked into certain dates. A good business strategy for Anaheim is to schedule all their shows before Long Beach, sucking away the retail dealers. Wirhout those dealers, the table fees at Long Beach skyrocket. If Heritage pulls out, like they did at Santa Clara, bye, bye.
