Counterfeits of these have been made for many decades so there is no assurance it is real simply because it has been in the family for many years. Of course, there is also the possibility that it is a genuine coin and then it will be worth good money. Please, whatever you do, do not clean the coin in any manner! Doing so will drastically reduce what it is worth.

Would be nice to have at least pic of the coin.

 

If it's genuine, then it's either variety BB-161 (no berries reverse, with the obverse first 2 stars thin) or BB-160 (no berries reverse, with the obverse stars fat).
