WON COIN 4X'S CHEAPER THAN GREY SHEET. IS THIS A FAKE AUCTION?

15 posts in this topic

I WON THIS COIN ON EBAY THIS MORNING. THE SELLER HAS NOT RETURNED MY EMAILS TO SEND A DIFFERENT SCAN. I WON IT FOE 4 X'S UNDER GREYSHEET. AS I DID RESEARCH THE COIN APPEARS TO BE THE EXACT PICTURE FROM A HERITAGE AUCTION BACK IN NOV. 2003. THE SELLER DOES NOT ACCEPT PAYPAL OR PERSONAL CHECKS. DOES ANYONE RECOGNIZE THIS COIN?

Here's the LINK. Just glancing at the auction makes me wonder . . . . The feedback for the seller is good, but all of the items on which feedback was given are expired. Checking on the past buyers from this seller shows, however, that none of them purchase coins. If the picture of the cent was copied from Heritage's archive, well . . . .

I do very little on eBay; but, having read other threads about suspect auctions, I might be concerned here. Hijacked account? Other members who have more experience on eBay should be able to provide more advice.

THANKYOU VERY MUCH FOR LINKING THE AUCTION. WHAT A WAY TO WELCOME SOMEONE TO THE FORUMS. THANKS! HOPEFULLY, I CAN GET THIS RESOLVED. MAYBE SOMEONE FROM THE FORUM KNOWS IT IS NOT A TRUE AUCTION. AND IF NOT I WILL KEEP EMAILING THE OWNER AND OFFER A COUPLE OF EXTRA BUCKS FOR HIM TO SEND IT COD PLUS THE CHARGES. OR SEND IT TO A REPUTABLE DEALER TO BE THE MIDDLEMAN. THANKS AGAIN!

The Morgan and Peace he has up now also use images taken from Heritage with the exact same description used by Heritage. These are all one day auctions accepting only money order or check.

This looks like a hijacked account to me. Someone trying to score some fast cash and disappear. If they can't send you an image proving they have the coin then you shouldn't send them a dime.

As for that Lincoln cent,it sure looks questionable and I wouldn't pay to you have proof of the coins existance.I hope everything works out.

Only time will tell if you will get the coin. I know that I often save the images from when I purchase a coin so I can use them if I decide to sell the coin in the future since my images are usually not as good as the pro's. So just because the image is the same as a previous auction, that doesn't mean the person you are buying the coin from does not own it.

I've gotten some remarkably good buys from Ebay, so I would relax for now, but it would be wise for you to contact the seller in one way or another before sending any payment. If they don't respond, then perhaps Ebay can assist you with your concerns.

Best of luck.

As posted by K6AZ on Tangents, Ebay is requiring those who accept PayPal to accept all payment forms...this is just the first step I think...to squeeze out the fake sales they will require sellers to use PayPal or some validated equivalent in the future (sooner better than later).

I only buy from sellers that accept PayPal (all forms) now as a means to have some form of arbitration...I know it is not perfect, but way better than sending basically cash to someone I don't know.

I hope this works out, but it is very questionable when the seller lists -

Item location: Bid on my Item

United States

I forget exactly how, but you can request from ebay the seller's contact information. Compare that to the invoice he sends you. Talk to the guy. Tell him your concern. Ask to pay with PayPal anyway. See what he says. Don't just mail this guy a check until you can prove that it is a real auction. Find out from his contact info where he/she lives. Check directory assistance. Call every number you get.

You will eventually get a decent answer from all the clues available to you. So far it doesn't look good. Item sold for 1/4th it's real value in a 1 day auction. What insufficiently_thoughtful_person would do that as a seller?
