Littleton Coin Company

I understand that, from a seller's point of view, they're regarded very favorably, because, although they are a very fussy buyer, they pay a bit more than most others and pay very promptly.

I haven't bought anything from them in several decades, but, my understanding from those who have bought something more recently is that the coins they send are nice for the grade, that is, if you order a VG coin, you'll actually get a nice VG coin from them, not a cleaned piece of trash. Also, some people feel that Littleton does the hobby a service by introducing beginners to coin collecting through their extensive advertising.

However, as you've probably noticed from their catalog, their prices are much, much higher than normal retail. Also, many people dislike their approval service.

Personally, I've never met anyone other than a very, very novice collector who buys coins from them.

they are a decent company promoting coins from a historical and learning aspect they have an overhead for all their full color catalogues and also their cute packaging

they most likely have weeted and interest and created many collectors that go on to better things

they never say the coins are investments or highest graded valuable pieces of plastic for a contrived set

they sell fun and the historical aspect for coins

cant fault them for that

they created a huge wholesale buying market making a market in things that no one has even done and in a sence has caused these types of coins to grow in value and also piggy back the growth of better dates and/or grades of these series by again creating new collectors some of which become more serious advanced collectors

you get what they promise

not for me but certainly for a FEW dollars more wets the appitates of many new collectors

just like skiing and water sports and model building does and these hobbies i guarantee you you get lots less tangible value than with littleton

I remember as a kid in the '70's, I used to get some (kind of cool but cheezy) foreign coin every month from them for but a couple of bucks which kind of supports michael's theory.

Their selling prices are much too high - shop elsewhere.

I have sold some coins to them at excellent prices though.

On the other hand, I once sent them an original bank-wrapped roll of 1881-S Morgan dollars to sell at their buy-price of MS-63, which was a pretty good price. My only requirement was that they buy all the coins and not cherry-pick.

They returned the roll with a statement that they will not accept "all or nothing" offers.

I'm sorry, but they were very foolish for not buying the roll - I ended up singling the coins off for more than their would-be offer, as ALL of the coins were choice (no surprise for 1881-S). So, they can be way overly fussy, in my opinion.

One more thing, I've bought a few collections that had some Littleton coins in them, and one thing's for sure, they are consistent, excellent graders. Honestly, I think their grading is easily on par with any third-party grading company.

Is there any chance we'll be seeing Littleton Grading Service slabs any time soon? 893scratchchin-thumb.gif

They helped get me into coin collecting, and it wasn't until I went to a coin shop that I learned I was paying too much. I agree with Michael.
