HELP! 1964 Roosevelt - what diagnostics differentiate between Proof and SMS?

9 posts in this topic

I've never seen a '64 SMS in hand so am hardly knowledgeable on them but believe this to be a proof. It doesn't look like a typical proof but I have seen proofs that look like this.

James there was no SMS in 1964 popcorn.gif

That was my first thought. But knowing James, I wonder if he knows something we don't... 893scratchchin-thumb.gif

Hey -- give it time. With all these "monster", "wild & crazy", "wowser" errors that seem to be coming out of the woodwork, I.E. 74 Aluminum, 89D and 90D cent on copper planchets, qtr mule with sac, 93D cent mule with reverse of dime (hmm... only one found??!!??) etc., etc., somebody could come out with one.

Guys, there were "SMS" coins struck in 1964. The mint experimented striking them in preparation for the SMS sets of 1965 - 1967, and some erroneously left the mint. I know there were halves and dimes struck this way (don't know about quarters or nickels).

But, I wouldn't know how to tell an SMS from a Proof. My guess would be the rims not being squared off.

I agree.......there were "64" SMS sets......but that coin looks like a proof to me James?

Maybe you can send it to someone in CONECA and have it attributed for you?

The mint struck an estimated fifteen to twenty five of each of the 1964 denominations in SMS. There were apparently more half dollars than the other coins. These experiments continued into 1965 and there are at least three distinct processes used on them and includes some hybrids of these. The '66 issues vary somewhat also.
