Need advice again

I have some coins coming back from NGC. One of the coins coming back was not graded. I'm so disappointed because It was sold to me a s Brilliant Uncirculated. The notation says "Improperly cleaned" I am reading NGC's Nograde booklet now. The coin is a 1881 S Morgan silver dollar. Should I consider sending it to NCS for conservation, or just forget about it?

1881 S is the most available Morgan date and is especially common is high mint state grades. Improperly cleaned then it is worth but silver. Sending it to NCS would be a waste of money and it would still be body bagged for being improperly cleaned. Besides, the fee alone would be triple the value of the coin.

Learn why NGC body bagged your coin. Do not buy another coin until you do this. That way you will learn from your mistake and your money can then be looked at as "not wasted". Get a 5 or 7 power Hastings Triplex loupe and find the hairlines in the fields that are most certainly present. Or that shiny rub in those same fields caused by a polishing wheel or eraser or whatever. Buy no other loupe but a Hastings----about 40 bucks but worth its price in gold. Bob [supertooth]

Hi Bob,

Thanks for your feedback. Will NGC give any more information about this coin other than It was improperly cleaned. Will purchase a loope as soon as possible.

The best way to learn is to go to shows and ask dealers to show you examples or go to an ANA grading class where you can get some hands on help from the best.

A turning point for me in progressing from a rookie into a more advanced numismatist was the ANA coin grading seminar. Since I am a cat scan technologist, my eye is more accustomed to distinguishing between fine details but whatever your background, this three day seminar is definitely worthwhile. But, there is no substitute like experience and knowledge.

The absolute best loop that one can buy is the Zeiss brand which has a 3X's, 6X's and 9X's magnification which run from $115-$135.

Good luck and thanks for the posts.
