A very nice day at the Santa Clara Pre ANA.

I arrived at the opening bell at 11:00AM. Appeared to be very busy at first. A line of about 30-40 collectors were waiting to get in. I met up with a couple of dealers and chatted for a while. Then I began to peruse the bourse floor and viewed a few cases before the lunchbreak. After lunch, the bourse appeared more subdued. Much of the dealer to dealer action began to calm. I was actively looking for nicer yearly Mexico and commems. Colored coins again were few, and the coins offered were expensive. Several dealers appeared cautiously optimistic, with a minority feeling the market was resurging with a modest vigor. Many tables were empty and the promotor allowed many dealers to spread out making the appearance of a full bourse. The stamp section was elimated for this show, so there was a large open space toward the back. The auction lot viewing area appeared anemic, with Superior and ANR lot viewing with few customers. By 3PM, retail traffic disappeared and many dealers were walking the floor. I noticed quite a few non-local dealers offering coins instead of setting up. From conversation, it seemed that collectors and dealers were holding back until ANA. Another Santa Clara so soon after April's show appeared to have saturated the retail market in the area. In addition, many dealers were holding back their "super" material until ANA. What surprised me was the number of dealers who told me they were ONLY going to walk the floor at ANA, and not set up, in order to save on expenses. A local CA dealer told me his expenses for ANA was going to be over $4000. 893whatthe.gif I really couldn't gauge the market from this show, but I inferred that the checkbooks stayed closed unless the "right" coins showed up. I also noticed less "stuff" in showcases, yet many dealers had multitudes of coinboxes on the backup tables.

Thanks for the report.

Just curious, what's the merit for dealer's saving best coins for ANA show instead of selling at the ongoing show?

In general, the high powered collectors will come out fo the ANA and not the pre show. There is mostly dealer to dealer action at the Pre ANA. Why offer your best material for wholesale knowing that a collector might pay double at the ANA show? In addition, word gets out quickly, so offering super coins early is not in the best interests of the seller.
